Begin2Swim Mission
Begin2Swim started in 2020. I had been a competitive swimmer through school, with volunteers spending countless hours committed to developing my skills. I still enjoy going for a swim and understand the benefits this lifelong sport can provide. It was time to give something back. I contacted a couple of local community based organisations to see if swimming lessons would be of interest to their groups. The answer was a solid yes. The more I researched into it the more reasons I found to get started. There are far too many avoidable drownings each year in New Zealand and this needs to change. There also seemed to be a lack of swim instructors that teach complete beginner adults - if there wasn't the opportunity to learn as a child, then there were few options available to learn the basics and get safe in the water. There is also the associated physical and mental health benefits that go hand in hand with the sport. Although I had taught friends and family to swim previously, I decided to learn as much as I could to build on that foundation. I signed myself up to the internationally recognised qualification provided by Austswim - Teacher of swimming and water safety. Subsequently, I have attended the Teacher of Aquatics - Access and Inclusion also provided by Austswim.
Begin2Swim Story
We're on a mission to get as many people to enjoy being in the water as possible by providing lessons for beginner adults. With this comes more safe and confident swimmers, reducing the number of drownings in NZ and increasing the health of the population. It's hard to learn to swim as an adult, especially if there is a fear of the water - We specialise in getting people started and then providing space to keep the newly learnt skills in practice
